INGLEWOOD Primary School student Madelyn Lawson is making waves at the highest level of Victorian swimming.
At just 10 years of age, Madelyn finished sixth in the State School Championships in the 11-and-under 50m breaststroke, putting her in elite company.
In swimming at the state titles, the Year 5 girl became the first student from Inglewood in living memory to compete at that level.
The whole school sat down to watch Madelyn’s swim on a video sent by her mother Jayne, a teacher at Inglewood, just minutes after the event.
Madelyn, who lives in Bridgewater and swims with the Bendigo Hawks club, also finished first in the 50m breaststroke at the Victorian Country All Junior titles in March.
She has also qualified for the third year running for the Victorian Country Championships in August.
She also has to shave less than a second off her 50m freestyle to qualify for that event as well.
Madelyn’s siblings, older sister Ruby-Sue and younger sister Sylvie are also keen swimmers.
Madelyn, who has been competing since she was seven, said breaststroke was her favourite event, and backstroke her least favourite.
And as for her ambitions: “I just want to take swimming as far as I can.”
