Wind blows for Blues

INGLEWOOD completed the double over Macorna last Saturday, with the Woodies handing former coach Fergus Payne just a sixth defeat in an impressive debut season for the Tigers.
Payne, who was suspended when the Tigers travelled to Inglewood earlier in the year and suffered their first defeat in the Loddon Valley league, was out injured for the return clash either, instead coaching from the sidelines.
But this was no grudge match. Both sides with a firm focus on securing a spot for the finals.
The ground surface at Macorna was significantly chopped up after two earlier games on the day following a week of torrential rain.
The wind was a bigger factor, running straight down the field and offering a significant advantage to the team kicking with it.
The Blues had first crack but failed to make the most of what was probably a four- or five-goal wind, kicking 3.3 to the Tigers’ 1.4 into the teeth of the gale.
Macorna had the chance to grab a decent lead by half-time, but they too wasted the opportunity with 3.4 to 0.4 in the second quarter for a seven-point margin.
Tom Kennedy was shading Macorna’s big ruckman Matt Colak in the hit-outs, although both were influential.
In another key contest, Charlie Aitken was on top of Tiger full-forward Dimitri Fasoulis, who managed only one goal for the day.
Erharter injured an ankle in the second term and was hampered for the rest of the game, limiting Macorna’s midfield and forward options. Inglewood broke open the game in the third quarter, kicking 5.7 to nothing and setting the Tigers a huge task in the last quarter when they booted four, but were matched by the Woodies, whose win kept them in fifth a game ahead of Maiden Gully, with Mitiamo to come this week.
Macorna is now just four points ahead of the Eagles and Newbridge, and less than two per cent ahead of Inglewood on seven wins.
This week’s trip to Newbridge shapes as crucial for both teams.
