FIRST-TIME winners outnumbered veteran Mitiamo players as they bluffed their way through the club song after the breakthrough win over Bears Lagoon Serpentine on Saturday.

Those getting the Gatorade shower may not have known the words to the song, but they celebrated the Superoos’ first victory in 315 days for all they were worth.

The win lifted Mitiamo off the bottom of the ladder on percentage over Calivil and was based on a four-quarter effort, according to coach Luke Lougoon.

“Apart from a little lapse in the first quarter we sustained the pressure for most of the game,” he said.

“And we have been doing a lot of work on kicking straight for goal, which paid off.”

There was just one scoring shot between the sides, with the Bears sorely off target in kicking 9.16 to Miti’s 16.10.

That accuracy gap was amplified in the second half, with the Superoos booting 7.4 to 2.11.

Lougoon, back after three weeks out with a hamstring injury, was best afield, with forward Seth Wright kicking six goals and Zach Morrison three.

Once again, Serp was lacking potency in the forward line, with only five goalscorers on the day, and the Bears’ season is on a knife-edge going into the split round. With only two wins for the year, the team is languishing in eighth place on the ladder, two games and a solid chunk of percentage behind Macorna in fifth spot.

Coach Jake Wilkinson (abductor) was one of more than a dozen senior players unavailable against Miti, with Farren Priest and Kade Tuohey injured during the game and propped up in the forward line just to keep numbers on the field.

Rex Taylor was injured in the warmup, which meant junior player Angus Addlem was drafted in for his third game of the day, having already played reserves and Under 18s.

Wilkinson, who hoped to be available for the Bears’ game against Inglewood on Saturday, said, “Mitiamo were just better than us, they wanted it more and they played better footy.”

Serp has a bye after the standalone match with the Woodies, with Wilkison optimistic that a handful of missing players might return after the break.

That includes prolific spearhead Josh Mellington, who has not played while recovering from pre-season thumb and ankle surgeries.
