Demons coach Sam Maher said his side had changed some aspects of its warmup to try to end the string of slow starts, and in the past two weeks he has been happy with how the first 10 minutes have gone.
Unfortunately for Calivil, their opponents have then slipped the chain, as the Mean Machine did on Saturday, keeping the Demons goalless until the third quarter.
Bridgewater coach Lachy Sharp returned after a week out with an abductor injury and promptly booted eight of his team’s 13 goals in a 70-point win.
Gold Coast-based fellow forwards Oscar McKinley and Mitch Patten were missing again and will not return until two weeks after the bye when Bridgey travels to Newbridge in the match planned to feature Gary Ablett junior and Gary Rohan.
“Our depth is being tested, but you move together,” Sharp said.
“We’ve got a really good bunch of young people coming through.”
The Mean Machine was still tinkering with positional changes to work out the team’s best lineup, Sharp said.
Harry Conway, named Bridgewater’s best against the Demons, has been moved forward this season and also spent time in the midfield.
Maher believed that Calivil had a couple of winnable games after the break, with Maiden Gully and Mitiamo the next two opponents.
The Demons’ one win for the season came against the Superoos in the opening round.
Bridgewater will face Pyramid Hill after this week’s bye.
