Will Jacinta Allan stay in Parliament

JACINTA Allan has walked away from the premiership and hinted her 27-year career in State Parliament could be over.

Ms Allan, the member for Bendigo East, quit just half an hour before she was to be challenged in the Labor Party Caucus as the Government battles plummeting fortunes in opinion polls before November's state election.

Her only hint of moving on from Spring Street was the phrase "whatever I do next" in the resignation speech.

Ms Allan has been contacted on her intentions to contest the seat where a challenge is underway from the Nationals' Andrew Lethlean.

Following more than an hgour of Caucus chaos, Ben Carroll has emerged as the new Labor leader and the state's 50th premier.
