However, after two early majors Inglewood kicked poorly for goal, letting Maiden Gully off the hook. Blues players copped a bake from assistant coach Ian Aitken at quarter-time for their mistakes and they hit the ground running in the second quarter, kicking five goals to one, including three in two minutes in a purple patch. There was no explanation for the Eagles’ dreadful inaccuracy in kicking 3.16 for the day, with little wind to excuse the players. Midfielder Liam Marciano was brilliant for the Woodies, with a plaintive cry from a Maiden Gully player in the second quarter – “Who’s on him!” – summing up his influence. Woodies coach Jackson Hood said Marciano was spending more time in the midfield this season after mainly being deployed in attack in recent years and was in the best patch of form he had seen from him. He said there was a lot of pressure early in the game but could not fathom the poor kicking for goal from both sides, noting that there were five or six other shots that went out on the full or fell short on top of Inglewood’s 13.15. Maiden Gully, which wants to transfer to the Bendigo league next season, is not putting up a great case for the move, with only two wins for the year and sitting two games out of the top five. Four-time reigning premier Marong awaits on Saturday before the bye for the King’s’ Birthday long weekend. Inglewood travels to Newbridge in an important clash for both sides as they strive for the lower reaches of the five. Hood said the Woodies earmarked last week’s game and the coming clashes with the Maroons and Bears Lagoon Serpentine as matches that were key matches in the race for the finals.
