The Rural Addressing Project is Loddon Shire Council’s response to a review of emergency services provided during the October 2022 flood event. Some requests for assistance during the flood event were unable to be followed through as the rural address provided was unable to be located, or directed the assistance to a different location.
To ensure that properties in rural areas are easy to find, Loddon Shire Council uses a standard called Rural Road Numbering for identifying properties on a rural road.
This is particularly important in emergency situations when time is critical and emergency services are trying to locate your property.
A rural road number is made up of an address number, road name and location. Each number is based on the distance of your property’s entrance from the start of the road.
To assist emergency services in locating your property have your rural road number displayed clearly at the entrance to your property.
If you are building a new home and have constructed your driveway and/or entrance to your property, contact Council on 5494 1200 and ask to speak to our GIS Officer who allocates township and rural addressing.
Following this you can purchase the appropriate reflective numbers and display them prominently at your driveway entrance.
You can also apply for a number if you have never had one before or have altered the original entrance point to your property.
WHY IS RURAL ADDRESSING IMPORTANT?
Many benefits come from having a Rural Road Number. Making your property easy to locate is particularly important in emergency situations when time is critical. Police, fire and ambulance services can be delayed if a property address is difficult to find.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT MY ADDRESS, RURAL ROAD NUMBER OR LOT NUMBER IS?
If you are unsure what your rural road number is, or would like to have a rural road number assigned, please contact Council on (03) 5494 1200. There is no cost involved in getting access to your Rural Road Number.
HOW DO I BEST DISPLAY MY RURAL ROAD NUMBER?
Once you know your Rural Road Number it is best to purchase the appropriate reflective numbers and display them prominently at your driveway entrance.
