BRAYDON Welsh has brought the curtain down on his stellar Upper Loddon cricket career with a stirring century.
He spearheaded KIngower to a stunning victory over Boort Yando at the home ground that had been the scene of his many fine innings since starting with the club as a junior.
Saturday’s innings was the former premiership skipper in vintage form.
The ton came off just 79 balls as he belted Boort’s bowling deliveries around the bushland ground. Welsh went straight to the boundary on 11 occasions, another three high and over the boundary.
Welsh had joined opener Matt Rowe at the crease with Kingower sitting at 2/69. The pair then put together a 124-run third wicket partnership.
The equally big-hitting Rowe found the boundary nine times and swung a mighty six before dismissed for 83 runs off 72 balls by Boort’s Alex Cockerell.
Both Welsh and Rowe took chances and survived. They were each dropped twice in the outfield in a four-over spell that saw Fergus Bear and Al Knight find the length to goad the Kingower pair.
The departure of Rowe did not temper Welsh’s innings - he was in no hurry for his final hit in the Yellow and Gold to end.
With support from new batsman and skipper Jayden Leach, Kingower’s score kept growing, their 87-run partnership only stopped in the 33rd over when Welsh was bowled by Blake Slatter.
Saturday’s farewell show by Welsh also means Kingower remains undefeated four rounds into this season’s four-team senior competition. Welsh last season captained Kingower to the flag and also took the association’s top batting awards.
Welsh has taken employment in Darwin and plans to later move to Perth.
