Volunteers tax fight continue

Volunteers want to do their job safely and effectively, but ageing appliances and inadequate facilities make that increasingly difficult, especially for smaller rural brigades, according to Michael Shay.

The CFA Volunteers Group leader and its secretary Leigh Harry are taking their fight for a better deal to MPs and continuing opposition to the State Government’s new emergency services tax. Mr Harry said it was vital that decision-makers listen directly to volunteers at the grassroots level.

“CFA volunteers protect their communities without pay, yet many brigades are struggling to access the funding needed to maintain safe equipment and fit-for-purpose stations,” Mr Harry said. “These issues need urgent attention if we want to sustain volunteering into the future.”
