AS COLDER weather settles across the district, local health authorities are urging residents to take precautions against influenza and other respiratory illnesses, with vaccination remaining one of the most effective forms of protection during the winter months.

Health experts say cases of flu, COVID-19 and other seasonal respiratory infections typically rise during the colder months as people spend more time indoors and viruses spread more easily throughout the community.

Young children, older residents, pregnant women and people with underlying health conditions are among those considered most at risk of serious illness and complications from influenza.

Inglewood Pharmacy pharmacist Kal Selwanes said staying up to date with annual flu vaccinations was “just the shot in the arm needed” to help communities stay healthy through winter.

“The flu vaccine remains one of the best ways people can protect themselves and those around them during the colder months,” Kal said.

The flu vaccine is updated each year to better target the strains expected to circulate during the season and is available through local doctors, pharmacies and health clinics.

Kal said even healthy adults could become seriously unwell from influenza and encouraged residents to stay home if sick, practise good hand hygiene and cover coughs and sneezes to help limit the spread of illness.

Residents are also being encouraged to check in on elderly family members and neighbours during the winter period, particularly those living alone or managing existing health conditions.

With flu season now approaching its peak, locals are being urged not to delay vaccination appointments and to take simple preventative measures to help keep the community healthy throughout winter.
