DEVELOPERS behind the planned 164-turbine wind farm at Meering West say they have already given more than $200,000 of support to Loddon and Gannawarra communities.

A spokesperson told the Loddon Herald on Monday: “Communities expect major infrastructure projects to deliver local benefits. Meering West Wind Farm has already provided more than $200,000 in sponsorships and support to local clubs, events and community organisations, including an electricity bill discount trial for households within 10km of the project.

“Once construction of the wind farm begins the thriving community grant fund will commence. Governance arrangements for this fund are currently being developed. Additionally, around 300 households are expected to be eligible for the ongoing electricity bill discount.”

Meering West says construction is expected to start in 2029 and create 300 jobs for up to four years on the site.

“(There will be) approximately 30 ongoing operational positions once the wind farm is complete,” according to the spokesperson.

“The project will create opportunities for local workers, contractors and businesses wherever possible.

“Specialist workers from outside the region will also be required, and accommodation will need to be coordinated in consultation with local councils, agencies, accommodation providers and other major projects.

“The transition to clean, cheaper electricity also creates opportunities for energy-intensive industries such as data centres, fertiliser, ammonia and hydrogen production.”
