Unit tops state for inclusion
WEDDERRBURN State Emergency Service unit’s for Auslan-led accessibility initiative has been named Victoria’s best for diversity and inclusion in the emergency service.

WEDDERRBURN State Emergency Service unit’s for Auslan-led accessibility initiative has been named Victoria’s best for diversity and inclusion in the emergency service.
Unit members were presented with the award at the SES ceremony last month and the award recognised “its outstanding contribution to championing diversity, inclusion and leadership within their team and community”.
Wedderburn unit previously won the same award at the regional level, and this year’s honour recognises their achievement at the state level.
The SES said the latest honour recognised the Wedderburn Unit’s clear, proactive commitment to fostering an inclusive environment that aligns with the values and strategic direction of SES.
“Most notably, the unit welcomed a profoundly deaf member into all aspects of operational and unit life,” the citation said.
“Recognising that true inclusion requires action, members of the unit undertook Auslan training to ensure effective communication and full participation — a practical, meaningful step that reflects their dedication.”
United controller Adele George said: “The Wedderburn Unit saw a simple goal: make sure every member can participate fully and safely.”
“Learning Auslan wasn’t just about communication — it was about respect, teamwork and making our unit stronger,” she said.
“We have a lot more planned to continue our journey throughout our region and across the state within Emergency Services
“The impact of these efforts has been significant and enduring.
“Developing Auslan capability within the unit has strengthened internal teamwork and external community engagement.
The unit regularly participates in events within the deaf community.
“The Wedderburn Unit has embedded diversity and inclusion as a core operational value rather than a one-off initiative, creating a stronger, more connected and more representative team.
“Their example contributes to a broader cultural shift across the Victorian State Emergency Service and demonstrates what can be achieved when inclusion is lived, not just expressed.
“The Wedderburn Unit demonstrates how practical, community-led changes create real inclusion,” said Mike Bagnall, VIC SES Awards Committee.
“Their leadership sets a standard for others to follow and reflects the very best of VIC SES,” he said.
