COMMUNITY stalwart Graeme Erbs has been remembered with the unveiling of a plaque in the park he helped establish.

Newbridge residents and Graeme’s family recalled his 30 years of community service until his death last year during the brief ceremony on Saturday.

George Wyatt said Graeme had been a founder of the town’s progress association when he swapped Melbourne life as a mathematics teacher for a posting to Bendigo Senior Secondary College.

“The progress association saw the potential of the hall and vacant block opposite the hotel/CFA now referred to as Progress Park, as areas to encourage people to stop and rest in Newbridge,” George said.

“The association then started raising funds to begin beautification of these areas by building a barbecue, tables and seats. Their beautification efforts went to organising a clean-up of the Newbridge tip and a tree planting working bee at the tip to grow plants to help reduce the plastic litter blown from the tip into neighbouring properties.

“The avenue of trees seen upon entering and leaving Newbridge via the Wimmera Highway was also a result of work by this progress association,” George said.
