WORK has on started on the Korong Vale flood study.

North Central Catchment Management Authority, Loddon Shire Council, and Victorian State Emergency Service are preparing the draft to better manage flood risk in the town.

The study has been allocated $78,000 in government funding.

Korong Vale was one of 21 towns announced in August 2019 for a flood study, identified through the North Central Regional Floodplain Management Strategy 2018-2028.

As one of the last to be started, the Korong Vale study will use modelling tools to produce detailed visual representations of a range of potential flood events and investigate a range of measures to manage and mitigate flood risk.

NCCMA waterways and floodplain officer Owen Hayden said the local community could play an important role in developing the study.

“We want the community to contribute their local knowledge and experiences about floods in the area,” he said.

“Local knowledge is essential to the study and will be used to ensure the flood models provide a good representation of the flood risk in Korong Vale.”

Mayor Dan Straub has also urged local residents to get involved in the process by sharing their knowledge with the flood engineers.
