WATCHING his pumpkins grow must be turning Bradley of Boort a bit greyer, judging by his latest Treemendous Sign. His boldness has seen the big Bee buzz off and leave a bit older this week.
HAD one of the older residents on the phone this week, one who regularly travels the Boort-Durham Ox Road. “I’m too scared of running off the road, I look straight past Bradley’s sign ... even if a little tempted to see what he has put up this week. It’s safer to read the saying in the Loddon Herald. Anyway, where does he get this sayings from?” said the cautious driver.
NOTHING like the unexpected. A few weeks ago, we changed the placement of Over The Fence. Since the birth of your Loddon Herald just under three years ago, OTF had mostly occupied pride of place on Page 2. A revamp to have more local news in your local newspaper has seen OTF make its way to our weekly feature pages. “I thought I was going a bit crazy when I couldn’t fine OTF the other day. Kept thumbing through the pages and sure enough, found it,” we have heard from another reader.
HE DIDN’T indicate where he reads the column but in case you missed it, last Sunday was World Toilet Day. Coliban Water informed the big wide social media world that there are 3.5 billion people still living without safe toilets. Governments need to work five times faster on sanitation to meet the goal of safe toilets for all by 2030. Poor sanitation contaminates drinking water, rivers, beaches and food crops, the local water body said, adding a “lack of toilets affects us all and damages the world we share”.
DID you know the use of paper for hygiene has been recorded in China in the 6th century AD, with specifically manufactured toilet paper being mass-produced in the 14th century. Modern commercial toilet paper originated in the 19th century, with a patent for roll-based dispensers being made in 1883.
WE ALSO discovered that before modern toilet paper was invented, people used a variety of materials, including silk, moss and snow. The Ancient Romans used a xylospongium, a sponge attached to a stick that was shared in public toilets. Glad things have changed in Rome these days.
BRADLEY’S PUMPKIN PROJECT UPDATE
THEY might be giants when they grow up but Good Gourd and Peter Peter have been growing slowly this week. Bippity Boopity Boo is catching up and looking very healthy vibrant green. It was a challenging week for the pumpkin babies with their bed soil still a little cool for great growth and we had an attack of Pumpkin Beetles. All goals and projects come with a few twists and turns. Hopefully our challenges will make the plants more resilient and they will grow to be giants and deliver a pumpkin boat to paddle in.
