Tennis associations kick off new season

Powlett forfeited its match against Wedderburn Junction for lack of players, despite the association bringing forward matches to 10am in the hope of encouraging more participants.
Korong Vale was host to Fentons Creek, but home court advantage meant nothing as the visitors streaked away, winning 17 sets to one and 143 games to 58 in recording a 23-1 points victory.
Korong Vale’s only win on a one-sided day was in the mixed doubles, in which Dave Longmuir and Susan Keller won a tight set 8-7 against Mal Burge and Jill Millie.
That win came after Korong Vale was whitewashed in the men’s and ladies’ doubles.
The tightest men’s contest was Louis Holt and Mitch Birthisel from Fentons Creek against Jayden Keller and Peter Gibson, with the visitors winning 8-6.
In the ladies’ doubles, Korong Vale’s Jayde Turnbull and Amber Gibson went down narrowly to Grace and Emma Lockhart, 8-7.
Powlett is due to host Fentons Creek on Saturday, with Korong Vale at home to Wedderburn Junction.
+ THE FIRST round of play in the Marong & District Tennis Association competition saw six teams on the courts, after the withdrawal of last season’s premiers, Marong.
All the visiting teams were successful on the day.
Wilson’s Reef defeated Woodstock 12-79 to 3-49, while Lockwood 10-76 beat Harcourt 5-56.
Derby 4-59 lost to Newbridge 11-75 at its home courts.
Next week sees Wilson’s Reef host Derby, Lockwood versus Newbridge, and Woodstock at home to Harcourt.
+ ONLY two matches were played in the opening round of the Loddon Valley Tennis Association competition, with the Dingee versus Mincha West clash not going ahead and Lake Meran having the bye.
Raywood 13-113 defeated Yarrawalla 5-68, and last season’s premiers Calivil North 14-112 beat Serpentine 4-87.
This week’s matches are Yarrawalla v Dingee, Serpentine v Mincha West, and Lake Meran v Calivil North, with Raywood having the bye.
