THE rich heritage gold area around Tarnagulla, Moliagul and Dunolly are one of six areas on Australia's tentative list released today in the bid for World Heritage listing of the Victorian goldfields.

Described as the Great Nuggets Historic Landscape, the area around Tarnagulla wasthe scene of major gold nugget finds including the world's largest nuggetr the Welcome Stranger at Moliagul in 1869 and the Poseidon Rush.

Also on the list are Bendigo Historic Urban Landscape,Castlemaine Goldfields and Historic Townships,Creswick and the Deep Lead Landscape,Mt Franklin andWalhalla Alpine Mining Landscape.

They are in the first formal step on the path to World Heritage status,celebrating the history, culture, and heritage of Victoria’s goldrush era.

Premier Jacintas Allan said: “From the historic streets of Bendigo to the grand buildings of Castlemaine and the untouched mining landscapes of Walhalla – the Goldfields stand as a living testament to those who came to Victoria, seeking a better life and how they transformed the state.”

“World Heritage sites are on bucket lists of tourists worldwide, and our historic Goldfields are on their way to be right there among them – helping to draw in more visitors from all corners of the globe and inject millions into our regional economies.”
