Commission can make call: league boss

SUCCESS of 2023 bids by Marong and Maiden Gully to join Heathcote District Football League could hinge on AFL Central Victoria commissioners.
League president Peter Cole said his clubs last year voted to accept the Loddon Valley pair only to have the commissioners overturn Maiden Gully’s formal application.
Marong withdrew at the last minute from pursuing a league switch in 2023.
“It will be the commission’s call,” said Cole.
He said while Heathcote’s current nine clubs were being kept informed of developments, including an overture from Central Murray club Cohuna to join its ranks, no formal club talks had been held.
“We are seeking clarity from the commission on what the process will be.
“We didn’t instigate these moves (by the three clubs). They rang and asked us about joining.
“We can say what we think but at the end of the day it’s the commission’s call.”
Loddon Valley clubs met on Monday night where the future of Marong and Maiden Gully in their league was discussed for a second time in 12 months.
League president Simon Tuohey said clubs would be encouraged to do due diligence.
“The clubs wanting to leave ... do due diligence, the other seven clubs do the same,” he said.
Formal applications to switch leagues cannot be accepted before August 1 unless the commission determines there are exceptional circumstances.
