Coach Andrew Rutley hoped the victory would kick-start the team’s season after an injury-plagued beginning saw the Magpies marooned in second-last place.
The six-goal win over the Saints still sees Boort seventh on the ladder but with winless Charlton to come after this week’s bye for the King’s Birthday long weekend, and a potential percentage boost on the cards, things are looking up.
The Navy Blues will have Brownlow Medal winner and Collingwood premiership player Dane Swan on the field for them against Boort, presenting a challenge for Rutley in his matchups.
“One guy is probably not going to make a massive difference, but I’m sure he will be hard to hold down.”
Rutley is not looking at Charlton as easybeats and would be happy with the four points in the hope of mounting a challenge for the finals.
“If we play the same brand of footy as we did against St Arnaud it doesn’t matter if we win by two goals or 10 goals.”
Jonno Lanyon came down from Darwin for the second time this year and was best afield, with his in-and-under work in the midfield perfect for the rainy conditions on the day.
Rutley said Lanyon would hopefully play three or four more games to quality for the finals should Boort get there.
Captain Keiren Wilson returned against the Saints after a severe shoulder injury suffered in round one, and his work as a key defender made the Magpies’ stronger in the back half.
