BRIDGEWATER Bakehouse is set to defend its Great Vanilla Slice Triumph title this weekend.

The Loddon business took out the title in 2018 and 2019 and has held the crown through two years of COVID cancellations.

Pastrycooks have been working the early hours of the morning this week fine-tuning preparation for the final entry batches that will be made today.

The Great Vanilla Slice Triumph started in Ouyen in 1998 after then-Premier Jeff Kennett claimed the vanilla slice from the town’s Mallee Bakery was the best he’d ever tasted.

In 2012, the competition attracting entries from around the country moved to Merbein.

While the Triumph has been in hibernation, the accolades have kept coming for Bridgewater Bakehouse.

Tripadvisor last year named its vanilla slice the best in Australia.

Bridgewater Bakehouse owner Pat O’Toole will again be aiming for “the flavouring and consistency of the custard that’s fluffy, the pastry that has a buttery texture and flavour and breaks clean when you take a bite”.

Success in the competition makes Bridgewater a popular stopping spot for tourists.
