Skates are on! Foreshore project gets two grants

A SECOND State Government grant in a fortnight will create new recreation spaces at Little Lake Boort.
The grants, one announced last week by the Government and a second confirmed on Monday by Loddon Shire Council, will see a start to project’s on the council’s wishlist for more than five years.
Council said news of the larger $495,000 grant for a skate and pump park meant two of its three applications under the Government’s Local Sports Infrastructure Fund had been successful.
It said the Little Lake Boort Foreshore Recreation Precinct, one of the jewels of Loddon Shire and would be boost in the makeover.
The Government had earlier this month announced $161,065 for lighting of two courts at Boort Lawn Tennis Club..
A skate and pump track had been identified by the local community as a priority, with a proposed location on tennis club courts next to Nolen’s Park.
Complementing the two projects council will replace and realign the existing tennis court fencing as part of the club relinquishing two courts for the skate park and pump track.
Mayor Dan Straub said the successful grants were a great result for one of council’s priority projects.
“This is a fantastic outcome for the Boort community and reflects the strong planning, collaboration and advocacy that has gone into developing these projects,” he said.
“We also thank the members of the Boort community groups that contributed to the success of these funding applications, and we can’t wait to get started and deliver outcomes that will provide fantastic benefits for the Boort community and the wider Loddon Shire.”
Councillors last October endorsed making three submissions to the infrastructure fund for the precinct project. that had been high on its priority list for five years.
Previous efforts to progress it had been unsuccessful due to a lack of funding.
The Coalition at last year’s federal election had committed to fund the project if it had won government.
A third application, for an accessible toilet facility at the Boort Croquet Club, was unsuccessful.
However, council said it would continue to explore further funding opportunities for this part of the project.
