SHEEP AND LAMBS
BENDIGO Livestock Exchange yarded fewer lambs on Monday, with numbers easing to 3900 head, while sheep numbers lifted to almost 3000 as producers continued to take advantage of the strong mutton market.
BENDIGO Livestock Exchange yarded fewer lambs on Monday, with numbers easing to 3900 head, while sheep numbers lifted to almost 3000 as producers continued to take advantage of the strong mutton market.
Larger lines of crossbred ewes and quality Merino wethers boosted the sheep offering, while the lamb yarding remained a mixed winter selection of smaller consignments.
Some buyers were still not operating at full capacity, although prices generally held firm for quality lambs.
There was little overall change in lamb values, with prices largely reflecting quality and pen size.
The heaviest export lambs continued to sell around 1000c to 1100c/kg cwt, while heavy and trade lambs generally returned 1100c to 1200c/kg cwt.
Export crossbred lambs topped at $397 a head, while outstanding grain-fed Merino lambs reached $390.
Export lambs over 30kg cwt sold from $327 to $397 a head, while heavy lambs weighing 26-30kg cwt made $312 to $359. Quality fed Merino lambs attracted strong demand, with heavy export Merinos selling to $390 a head, other heavy Merinos making $335 to $375, and trade-weight Merinos returning $280 to $295.
Better trade lambs sold from $280 to around $310 a head, while mixed trade lambs made $250 to $275. Plainer light lambs eased in value, generally selling from $160 to $240 a head.
The mutton market remained strong, with heavy crossbred ewes selling from $300 to a top of $366 a head.
Quality Merino wethers with good frame and weight made from $260 to $320 a head. Most sheep continued to return between 850c and 950c/kg cwt, with younger Merino wethers occasionally approaching 1000c/kg cwt.
