The market proved erratic across most categories, with several regular buyers absent or inactive, leading to softer prices for many lambs and a cheaper mutton market.
The yarding featured another strong run of grain-fed lambs, including several extra-heavy pens exceeding 40kg cwt, before quality dropped away into mixed winter drafts. Well-finished processing lambs with good shape and finish generally held firm, but the broader run eased by $5 to $10 a head, with plainer woolly lambs recording the biggest declines. Feedlot competition helped support the market, with a local agency paying up to $312 a head for suitable trade and heavy lambs.
Four pens of extra-heavy export lambs sold above $400, topping the sale at $449 a head. Most export lambs made between $338 and $385, while heavy lambs weighing 26-30kg cwt sold from $286 to $320.
Trade lambs generally returned $260 to $285 a head, with feeder demand helping offset quieter domestic competition. Light lambs sold from $170 to $245 a head, while the smaller offering of Merino lambs topped at $285, with lighter processing types making $195 to $236.
The sheep market eased after reaching record levels the previous week, with prices generally $10 to $30 a head lower as some key buyers were absent. Outstanding Merino wethers still sold to $374 a head, while heavy crossbred ewes made from $308 to $380.
Most sheep sold between $200 and $280 a head, with mutton values generally ranging from 850c to 930c/kg cwt, although select lines still reached 1000c/kg.
