BENDIGO Livestock Exchange recorded one of its smallest yardings in decades on Monday with limited winter supplies and recent heavy rainfall contributing to a sharp fall in numbers.
Just 3750 lambs and 620 sheep were offered, creating stronger competition and price rises of $20 to $30 a head across many categories.
While not all buyers attended, some processors returned from winter shutdowns and demand lifted throughout the sale.
Tight supplies created strong bidding, with better-presented lambs generally making between 1120c and 1200c/kg cwt, while select trade-weight lambs reached close to 1300c/kg.
Merino lambs were again strongly supported and sold dearer, with the best pens estimated above 1100c/kg cwt.
Three pens of heavier export lambs sold above $400, reaching a market top of $458 a head.
The main run of heavy lambs weighing 26-30kg cwt made from $324 to $370, while quality trade lambs sold from $280 to $328.
Better Merino trade lambs returned $260 to $300 a head, and decent lighter processing lambs across all breeds made $200 to $250.
Secondary first-cross lambs in longer skins ranged from $260 to $320 depending on weight.
The average lamb price across the yarding was $295 a head, up $25 on the previous Monday.
The sheep market produced record strength at Bendigo, although on very limited numbers. Strong processor competition pushed the heaviest ewes to $400 a head, while many heavy sheep and quality trade Merinos carrying wool sold from $300 to $370.
Lighter sheep were limited and generally made between $180 and $250.
The average sheep price lifted $20 to $296 a head, highlighting the continued strength of the mutton market.
