LIFE in Boort for the last six weeks has been better for Ukrainian student Ihor Mykolaihuk.
The 15-year-old from Kyiv had been living in Poland since Russia launched attacks on the capital in February last year.
“It was kind of bad in Kyiv ... I have a friend who is missing,” said Ihor enjoying a final hit of tennis at Boort courts on Saturday before heading to Seymour where he will continue his education until next June.
“My father is a soldier in the Ukraine. He was with a group - two were killed, Dad lost a finger.
“(The war) is interrupting life but you get used to it.”
After moving to the safety of Warsaw with his mother, Ihor said the search started for a school where he could continue his education.
Australia had been a good move, he said. Ihor has been part of the Year 9 class at Boort District School since arriving in October, staying with Kelly and Brenton Henderson.
A keen musician who plays bass guitar, Ihor has taken to tennis during his time in Boort with regular lessons and encouragement from club president Greg Bear and other members.
