Rodda regains champion crown

IT WAS a case of déjà vu at Boort’s Easter Tennis Tournament, with former winner Jarrod Rodda taking out the men’s singles on Good Friday.
Another previous champion, Allison Whitbread, won the women’s singles title.
Last year’s men’s winner, Jarrod Savage, sacrificed his chances of a 16th win in the singles to play with his young son Brodie in the family male doubles competition.
They did not win the event, but Brodie had a great time having a hit with his legend of a dad, organiser Alister McDougal said.
Savage was in some doubt after having his appendix removed on Labour Day, but he entered regardless, along with his wife Natalie, who won the women’s singles last year.
Almost 260 players appeared in the four-day event, up on last year’s figure of 237 competitors.
The singles’ winners went home with a perpetual trophy and $500 prizemoney in their pockets. Other events included veteran mixed doubles for over-40s and over-60s, and Fast-4 tennis in men’s, women’s and mixed categories.
McDougal reported that the social side of the tournament went well, including the ferret races on Saturday night and a performance from local musician Elias Lanyon.
