CHAMPION rally co-driver and one of the Loddon’s greatest 21st century sporting exports, Rhianon Gelsomino, is the official ambassador for the Loddon Herald Spots Star of the Year awards.
The American champion and two-time US 2WD victor is back in Australia for the Christmas holidays and jumped at the invitation to inspire the feats of today’s sportsmen and women in local communities.
Winners of the monthly sports star award become eligible for the major annual award with nominations drawn from articles in the Loddon Herald.
Rhianon said: “I am very excited to be named as the ambassador for the Loddon Herald Sports Star awards.
“Having grown up in Wedderburn, sport was everything to my family,” said the former school physical education teacher who had her first introduction to community sport through tennis and netball.
“It was a great way to connect to the local community and build friendships.
“Sport has taught me so many things in life and become my career. I was a PE teacher for six years, before taking up professional co-driving full time in 2010.
“Sport has allowed me to have a dream and chase it. It’s taken me all over the world.
“Sport has taught me that anything is possible if you work hard. I can’t wait to be involved in this amazing award in our local community and share my support and encouragement of the amazing local sportspeople playing sport they love for the towns and communities they are a part of,” Rhiannon said.
Rhianon’s acceptance of the ambassador role comes as champion Pyramid Hill motocross rider Judd Chislett is named as November’s sports star of the month. Judd is the second monthly winner with John Coffey being named the October star.
The inaugural sports star of the year will be announced at a dinner next October.
