MALLEE MP Anne Webster asked the question and received an answer: the Federal Government has no plans to cut and freeze its tax take for petrol and diesel.

Dr Webster said there were concerns for local road construction and maintenance “critical to people who live in regional centres” if the 44 cents a litre excise was cut in the Budget to be handed down on March 29.

Independent Mallee candidate Sophie Baldwin said a short-term cut to fuel excise was critical for rural people. “Cost of living is out of control. People in the country have huge distances to travel just to get to work and farmers about to sow are now facing huge fuel bills.”
