BROWN timber posts have given way to black recycled plastic guides on an approach to the Loddon River at Bridgewater.
Loddon Shire last week replaced the guide posts separating the Calder Highway and the Bridgewater Hotel carpark.
The new posts are made from recycled plastic garbage bins.
Posts were damaged last month when a vehicle left the highway and landed in the river.
Council’s director operations Steven Philips said: “The bollards have been replaced with like for like. Their purpose is to delineate the car park from the Calder Highway. They are made from recycled plastic and are frangible (impact absorbing).”
Police and residents called for greater safety measures after the smash that saw parked vehicles damaged and hotel staff jump away from the car verging off the highway in a 50kmh zone.
The Department of Transport said it would support Victoria Police to investigate the incident to determine if further safety upgrades were required.
Regional manager Melanie Hotton said: “We all have a role to play when it comes to road safety. We need everyone to make safe choices on our roads and we urge drivers to pay attention when travelling and to obey speed limits and road rules.
“We encourage the community to report hazards and any concerns about the condition of the arterial road network by calling 133 778.”
