Proposal to end automatic duck season rejected

THE State Government has rejected a Wildlife Act review recommendation that called for an end to automatic approval of duck seasons.

Regional Victorians Opposed to Duck Shooting said the Government had supported less than half the review’s 40 recommendations.

The Government said the duck season recommendation in the review was not consistent with tits response to the recommendations made by the Parliamentary Inquiry into Victoria’s recreational native bird hunting arrangements.

That inquiry saw the Government back continued “safe, sustainable and responsible hunting”.

RVOTS spokesperson Kerrie Allen said: “Of (Wildlife Act) 40 recommendations, less than half are supported by the Allan government. A quarter are not supported. Thirteen are ‘supported in principle’ but it is unclear what this means or when details of the new scenario will be released for public review.”

“It’s difficult to see how the Allan Government can genuinely care for regional communities or native wildlife when native bird shooting continues to be permitted across the state, in direct contradiction to its own government recommendations.”

The group has questioned the refusal to support a recommendation which calls for duck shooting to take place only if the minister is satisfied duck populations are stable and shooting will not jeopardise their conservation.
