STUDENTS are embracing the opportunity to work collaboratively with their peers through the Hands on Learning program at Pyramid Hill College.
Teacher Luke Roberts said students in Years 5 to 8 were developing skills in time management, planning and preparation as well as applied literacy and numeracy to projects undertaken, which were heavily based on student voice.
“The program is running every Thursday and is designed to build practical and interpersonal skills through hands-on activities within the college and local community,” he said.
“Participating students develop a focus plan as part of their participation in the program, with the aim of transferring the skills developed back into the traditional classroom setting.
“Projects have included: learning how to prune and graft trees, making chairs for the golf club, building a bike track, making trays for teaching staff, sowing vegetables, pickling olives, housing chooks, maintenance at the school, designing and building a ‘gaga’ ball pit and many more.”
Students have also visited Simply Tom-atoes at Boort and Yarrawalla’s Billabong Organics.
