Primary school students awarded Masonic scholarships
LODDON primary school students are among recipients of Central Goldfields Masonic Group scholarships.
Awards were presented to Year 6 students last month, the $300 scholarships to assist in their transition to secondary school.
Tarnagulla student Olivia Watters was presented with her award by group chairman Ken Calder.
Inglewood Primary School’s Shelbie Brereton received her award at the school’s presentation evening where students and staff also presented music and dancer performances.
The group awarded 23 primary school scholarships and two major secondary school scholarships during school presentation evenings last month.
Mr Calder said funds were donated by Masonic Lodges in the Maryborough district and a series of fundraising activities across the region. “All these funds are matched by the Freemasons Foundation Victoria.
“Selection of students is left to each school principal and Year 6 teacher who will know students well enough to decide that one year six student is likely to make the most of their educational opportunities and is thus worthy of encouragement.”
The group has been awarding scholarships for more than 30 years and in recent years expanded the number available to schools in southern Loddon Shire communities and other areas. Mr Calder said the local scholarships were part of the wider working of the foundation supporting communities across Victoria and annual scholarships for tertiary students.
