Opening set women spur win to count
NEWBRIDGE only beat Lockwood once in Marong and District Tennis Association this season, but the Maroons did it in the one that counts, taking out the grand final last Saturday.
It was Newbridge’s first premiership for 13 years.
Newbridge won 10-70 to Lockwood’s 5-58 in a contest which saw a lot of one-sided matches played at Marong’s Malone Park.
Ashlea and Emma Jenkyn set the tone for Newbridge with a 6-0 win over Tamara Miller and Danielle Wells in the women’s doubles.
The Maroons almost swept that category, winning four of the five sets.
Newbridge won the men’s doubles 3-2 and took out the mixed doubles by the same score.
Strong results were posted by David Stewart and Andrew Broom, who won their men’s doubles 6-1, and MacKenzie Nally who teamed with Broom for a 6-1 win in the mixed event.
Broom, the Newbridge captain and one of the stars of the day, said his side’s rapid start meant “we didn’t have to chew too many fingernails”.
However, the Maroons players were conscious that things could turn around quickly and didn’t celebrate too early.
“It was a close, but comfortable win,” Broom said.
“Everybody played well, and it was a good team effort,” said the skipper
