Three fires at Mount Moliagul: fears could be suspicious

Latest advice from the fireground is that all three fires have been contained. Fire units, machinery and choppers have been part of the effort.

  • There is a bushfire at Mt Moliagul - Mt Moliagul Road that is under control.
  • The bushfire is travelling from Cherry Gardens Road in a south-easterly direction towards Moliagul - Rheola Road.

FIREFIGHTERS have called for investigators as they battle three fires at Mount Moliagul on Sunday afternoon.

More than 30 CFA and Forest Fire Management Victoria units at fighting the fights, the first was reported soon about 4.15pm.

The major concern for firefighters in the fire in Cherry Orchard Road.

Loddon South and Wedderburn Group brigades have also been backed up by Lockwood and Baringhup volunteers and aircraft.

They are expected to be joined shortly by strike teams from Bendigo. Several Bendigo brigades are already on the scene.

Firefighters were initially called to the fire on Mount Moliagul Road, near the Wimmera Highway, before a second column was spotted. A third was seen soon after 5.30pm.

They fear the fires may have been deliberately lit.

A CFA watch and act has been issued. It says:

  • There is a bushfire at Moliagul that is not yet under control. 
  • Firefighters have not been able to stop the fire. The situation can change at any time. You must monitor conditions and be ready to act.

  • Monitor changes to the situation. Increased wind speed, change in wind direction, smoke or poor visibility can indicate the situation is changing. 
  • Enact your fire survival plan. 
  • If you do not have a plan, decide what you will do if the situation changes. 
  • If you have time, check your neighbours to see if they are monitoring conditions. 
  • Protect yourself and your family.

Leave if the situation changes or you feel unsafe. 

Remember to:

  • Take your pets, medications, mobile phone and charger. 
  • Many people have died trying to leave at the last minute during fires.

  • Motorist travelling on the Wimmera Hwy, and Rheola-Moliagul Rd, Moliagul may experience smoke over the road and reduced speeds.
