Successful year at Wedderburn College in 2023

WEDDERBURN College established a more formal Year 6 graduation ceremony this year to celebrate all students first seven years of education before students move into secondary school.
All students made an individual
presentation to family and friends before being presented with graduation certificates and a school pen.
As a part of the new celebration the school has also instituted several awards that will be presented to students who excel in year 6.
The major new award is the ‘Bob Steel Community Award’ presented to the Year 6 most outstanding student of the year. Bob Steel is a larger-than-life character, local legend, humble and passionate Wedderburn resident. An ex-Wedderburn State School and High School student who has gone on to redefine what it means to be an active volunteer in your community. A unanimous pick to name this award after due to the sheer volume of community work that he has volunteered to the Wedderburn community for over seven decades. He continues to promote, work and volunteer all
throughout the community and is always promoting opportunities for young people.
The inaugural winner of the Bob Steel Community Award was Lily
Finch.
The second major award was the Joseph Lockhart Principal’s Award, won by Bastian Noordennen. Joseph Lockhart was the first head teacher of the Wedderburn State School No. 794 established in 1865 at 24 Wilson Street.
His great grandson times six Mr Dean Lockhart is the current Assistant Principal and has also served time as the school’s Acting Principal.
Both Bob and Dean were present to hand out the awards.  The Wedderburn College would like to thank all students, staff, parents, carers, and community members for supporting us this year.
“We look forward to the
next two years of the major building projects: 2024 new school renovations, and the new Wedderburn Early Childcare Centre in 2025,” said principal Danny Forrest.
Planning has already begun for a school-wide 25-year celebration at Wedderburn P12 College next year.
And Mr Forrest said there would be even bigger celebrations marking 160 years of education in Wedderburn in 2025.
