WEDDERBURN Fire Brigade has had one of the biggest influxes of new members ahead of its 130th anniversary next month.
Nine recruits have started weekly training under CFA instructors.
Among them is Michelle Hargreaves who who is helping long-time members organise of acelebration dinner next month.
Also stepping up to join the brigade have been Robert Tonkin Lindsay Boulton, Leon Holt, Ricardo Plateo, Ross Hannah, Owen Lockhart, Will Holt and Melinda Spring-thorpe
Wedderburn became a registered brigade on December 8, 1893, and among long-serving volunteers have been members of the White family. Current brigade chairman and former captain Neville White has been a member for almost 60 years and followed in the footsteps of his father who served for half a century.
Neville said: “We’ve stuggled for quite a while to get members so it is great to see so many wanting to join at the moment.”
He said that after initial training, there would be courses to assist them obtain a heavy vehicle licence.
“It’s been a battle for some years to have anyone to drive the truck,” Neville said.
Secretary Louise Gamble said: “It’s like winning Tattslotto.”
Next month’s dinner will see service awards presented to long-time members.
