The museum’s committee hopes to build community involvement and has launched a Friends membership initiative.

It comes as the small team of six volunteers starts furnishing the neighbouring cottage to be another part of the High Street museum.

The gallery’s current exhibition of works by Jude Raftis and Barb Petrie is an exciting exploration of landscape, 3-D foliage and portraiture. There is also a small “commemorative” exhibition of the art of Margaret Holtham, one of the gallery’s founders, who died earlier this year.

The museum is renowned for its Devonshire tea and people signing up for $10 to be Friends will receive a free cup of tea each month and regular updates on exhibitions, says volunteer Margaret Bentley.

“The museum and Gallery, run by volunteers, serves our community as a preserver of our local history and heritage, a gallery for local artists and crafts people and a convenient place for a snack or Devonshire tea,” she said.
