Moss moment in massive day for goals

WHEN a key forward kicks 25 goals, as Bridgewater coach Lachie Sharp did last Saturday, you’d think it wouldn’t leave too much scope for anyone else to score.

But the Mean Machine had 11 goalkickers in their 233-point annihilation of Mitiamo, including first-gamer Logan Moss, brought up from the Under 18s, who booted five.

Having kicked 12 a week earlier to reach 100 for the third season in a row, Sharp turned on a clinic against an undermanned Superoos outfit as his team scored 42 goals.

So strong is Bridgewater, Moss is likely to lose his place in the senior side against Calivil this week, with Oscar McKinley, who is fifth on the league goalkicking ladder with 37 in nine games, and Mitch Patten both set to return.

Sharp admitted that competition for spots was intense, with a points cap of 44 weighing heavily on the team as it steams towards the finals.

“We’re in a really good situation as a club at the moment,” he said. “We will work out the selection issue as a coaching group – it’s one of those things that you take as it comes.”

Bridgewater’s reserves are unbeaten and its Under 18s are second on the ladder, with the club’s depth of talent the envy of the league.

Only captain Harry McKinley, who tore an ACL earlier this season, is unavailable for selection, with former premiership coach Andrew Collins, 37, now having played three senior games as finals loom.

While top spot and a week off is seemingly assured, Sharp is not making any rash predictions.

“If we win the next couple of games and finish on top, then we will work through what comes next,” he said.

If the Mean Machine tops the ladder and then wins its first final, it will reach the grand final having only played one game in three weeks.

Sharp said if that eventuated, he might call a training session for the Saturday of the preliminary final, but he is wary of what could happen before the home and away season ends.

“I’ve broken a leg in the last round myself, so you only look ahead a week at a time” he said.

After Calivil, Bridgewater plays Macorna in the final round, one of only two teams to have beaten it this year.

Mitiamo meets Bears Lagoon Serpentine and Marong to finish off a disappointing season.
