Merry-go-round’s uncertain future

THE historic merry-go-round at Little Lake Boort looks likely to have another idle summer as assessments are made on the popular children’s ride.

New Boort Tourism and Development president Bradley Haw said the engineering inspections had been made and assessments of future safety standards that would have to be met to bring life back into the ride that last ran more than two years ago.

“At the moment, it would be a very expensive exercise to bring the ride back up to operational standards and to train people,” he said.

Mr Haw, who was elected president of the town’s community planning group earlier this month, said a massive injection of funds would be needed to have the ride running.

The 1940s merry-go-round on the Little Lake Boort foreshore was brought to Boort from Geelong in 1959 and is a popular attraction in holiday periods.

Mr Haw said his aim as president of BTD was to see more local projects identified and funded under annual contributions from Loddon Shire.

A meeting on Monday will begin a review of the current community plan.
