McKinley needs a a miracle - coach
BRIDGEWATER is “hoping for a miracle” as the club sweats on the results of scans expected to confirm that inspirational captain Harry McKinley has ruptured his ACL, ending his season.
McKinley went down late in the win over Inglewood on Sunday, falling in a way that reminded coach Lachie Sharp of Western Bulldogs star Sam Darcy’s knee injury a few weeks ago in the AFL.
There was no contact involved and his knee gave way after he tried to change direction.
In obvious pain, McKinley was assisted from the field by three Bridgewater match-day staff.
Confirmation of a torn ACL would sideline McKinley for 12 months, with scans being taken in Melbourne on Tuesday.
Sharp admitted that “it doesn’t look great”, while praising the midfielder’s influence on the senior side.
“He’s such an exceptional leader,” he said of McKinley, who is in his second season as skipper of the Mean Machine.
“Harry’s such a pivotal part of the side, and someone will now have to step up in his place.”
In fact, Sharp said, the entire squad would have to show leadership qualities.
He is already planning for McKinley’s absence for the rest of the season.
Bridgewater has shown the depth of its midfield stocks with Kangaroo Flat recruit Pat Murphy making an instant impact, but the loss of McKinley will hit hard.
McKinley finished equal fifth in the Frank Harding Medal for the best and fairest player in the Loddon Vallery league last season and had begun 2026 in excellent form.
