NEWBRIDGE had a commanding 62-31 win over a disappointing Bears Lagoon Serpentine team at Riverside Oval. The Maroons kept the Bears’ star goaler Ava Francis in check and powered to a victory that lifted the side to third on the ladder. Goal defence Leah Oxford and wing attack Sarah McLuskey were best for the winners, who face fourth-placed Marong this week. “We came in with a game plan working on trying to beat a holding shooter like Ava,” Maroons coach Hayley Martiniello said. She was particularly happy with her team’s transitional game in turning intercepts into goals. Serp is third from bottom after six rounds with just two wins, with a tough clash against Pyramid Hill to come on Saturday. MITIAMO was pushed for the first time this season but still came away with an 18-goal win over perennial rivals Pyramid Hill on Saturday. After averaging winning margins of more than 40 goals in the first five rounds, the Superoos were made to work harder for victory against the team that they have beaten in the past two grand finals. The Bulldogs’ personnel are much changed this season, and the team is firmly back in the pack with a 3-3 record and sitting in sixth place. Never headed after a 20-11 first quarter, Mitiamo increased its lead at every change against a persistent Pyramid Hill team that is still taking time to gel. Mitiamo’s experience again showed out, with multiple premiership winners on every line. MACORNA remains winless on the bottom of the ladder but can point to a much-improved effort against Marong. The Tigers were more threatening in attack than in previous games and were left to rue a slow start. Down by 15 goals at half-time, they matched the Panthers in the second half in an encouraging display. Goal defence Emily Robins was again best for Macorna, who face Calivil this Saturday, while Marong is at home to Newbridge.
