Maroons eye turning table on Marong flag favourites
Can Newbridge turn the tables in today's Marong association tennis grand final?
NEWBRIDGE will have to beat Lockwood for the first time this season if it is to triumph in the Marong and District Tennis Association grand final at Marong on Saturday.
And club captain Andrew Broom is confident the Maroons can turn the tables.
“This could be the year,” he told the Loddon Herald.
Newbridge has not won the title for 13 years but goes into the decider with a full and fit squad.
Lockwood has defeated the Maroons twice in the 2025-26 competition, winning in rounds two and seven.
“Those matches were not really close – they won convincingly enough – but they were not thrashings,” Broom said.
Newbridge had improved since those early-season clashes.
“I’m confident in all the players,” Broom said.
Weather caused the abandonment of the scheduled third clash between the teams in round 12.
Newbridge finished the home and away matches in second spot on the ladder, with a 10-3 record placing them a game behind Lockwood. The team is a mix of youth and experience, with the age of players ranging from the early 20s to the 60s.
A strong win over Derby in the semi-final, 12-82 to 3-42, saw the team through to the final.
Lockwood beat Wilsons Reef 10-81 to 5-57 a fortnight ago to set up the clash with Newbridge.
Both sides go into the grand final refreshed with no play in the Marong association over the long weekend.
