Major routes certainly the right spots for friendly reminders

WITHIN a week of speed check signs being attached to poles in Inglewood, people like Peter Moore sees the positive influence they are having on drivers.

It’s an influence Mr Moore and other people across Loddon Shire communities would like to see expanded.

For as long as the Inglewood community has been campaigning on Brooke Street safety, so too have communities in Newbridge and Tarnagulla hoping that authorities may do more to make their main thoroughfares safer.

Newbridge is on the Wimmera Highway, Tarnagulla where the link with the state’s west takes a right-hand turn.

Without the benefit of the high-tech signs checking speeds, locals have been left to make “considered estimates” on the speeds travelled by some vehicles after they cross the Loddon River.

That these drivers would want to forego a pleasant stop in the Loddon River town or explore the heritage streetscape of Tarnagulla may bewilder local residents.

But if they must persist on the journey, observe the speed limits.

Annual grants are available for local councils through the State Government for community road safety initiatives. Perhaps, just perhaps Loddon Shire could explore with residents in other towns whether they see merit in the installation of speed check signs for their main streets.
