WORK has started on a new animal pound for Loddon Shire.

The pound is being built near Wedderburn to replace the existing and ageing facility at council’s Wedderburn depot.

Part of the shire’s annual infrastructure program, the project is budgeted to cost about $438,000.

Community compliance coordinator Jordan Fraser said the new facility would provide a safer and more comfortable space for dogs and cats waiting to be reunited with their owners.

“In the meantime we will continue to care for lost and impounded animals at the current facility, but staff are very excited to get the new pound up and running,” he said.

“While we look forward to the new pound, the best way to make sure your dogs or cats don’t end up in it is to ensure they are registered and microchipped. Doing both ensures we can return lost animals to their owners.”
