FORMER Wedderburn resident and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Barrie Lester has been presented with the Games’ flag to be flown when Victoria hosts the event in 2026.
Lester grew up in Wedderburn and started lawn bowling at the local club as a 16-year-old.
He now works on the Gold Coast and is bowls co-ordinator with the Burleigh Heads club.
The Commonwealth Games Federation flag was lowered in the main Birmingham arena during the closing ceremony on Tuesday and passed from the president of the Commonwealth Games Federation Dame Louise Martin to Lester.
Lester, a member of the silver medal winning triples team in Birmingham, then handed the flag to Victoria’s Governor Linda Dessau.
Lester later said he was “very emotional and honoured to be involved in tonight’s closing ceremony of behalf of Team Australia”
He first represented Australia in 2006 and has gone on to bring home multiple silver and bronze medals from Commonwealth Games.
In 2016-2017, Lester was named Bowls Australia Male Bowler of the Year.
Bendigo will be a regional hub for the 2026 Games with lawn bowls one of the confirmed events in the region.
The Queen’s Baton relay will arrive in Australia after touring other Commonwealth countries before the games start in March 2026.
