ORCHESTRA Victoria musicians will bring the story of Leonard the Lyrebird to musical life in Inglewood next week.

The orchestra is visiting Bendigo for a series of performances and workshops.

The Inglewood library performance on Wednesday by clarinet, cello and piano is one of four organised by Goldfields Library Corporation and the only performance outside greater Bendigo.

Set in the bushland of the Blue Mountains, Leonard the Lyrebird is a story of friendship, bravery and being yourself.

Composer Ian Munro has set the picture book by Jodie Mc-Leod to music, with the regional library corporation saying the short and interactive performance would be “a delight for all music lovers and a perfect first musical experience for young people”.

McLeod’s book won the 2019 Whitley Award for Best Young Children’s Book and was short-listed for the Reading and Enjoying Australian Literature Awards.

She said of Leonard the Lyrebird: “The story itself is a mix of prose and verse, with a little bit of tension towards the end in the form of a bunyip.”

The performance is free but bookings are encouraged.
