LODDON system irrigators will have the right to take water if restrictions are placed on rivers.
The State Government on Tuesday announced its new Place Of Take policy that Water Minister Harriet Shing said would protect water users’ rights to take water from the rivers in the event of a shortfall.
The policy will also apply to the Murray, Goulburn, Campaspe, Broken, Ovens, Werribee, and Thomson-Macalister River systems.
“The new Place of Take approvals clarify and protect existing water users’ rights to take water during the rare event that river restrictions are required, giving them more certainty in times of drought,” she said.
“As our climate gets drier it’s critical we continue to adapt our water management to ensure both the needs of the environment and other water users can be met.”
