STUDENTS from East Loddon P12 College have been the latest group to be part of the Minerals Council of Australia’s mine field trips.
They visited Fosterville gold mine, near Bendigo, for an insight into employment in the sector including drilling, light and heavy vehicle automotive, truck drivers, geologists, geo-techs, environmental officers health, human resource management, safety officers and more.
“We were so lucky, at each stop we met experienced and apprentice staff who were all willing to share their story, their positives of the industry and working at Fosterville mine,” said the school’s senior sub-school leader Sarah Krahe.
Minerals Council of Victoria executive director James Sorahan said: “It was great to have East Loddon take part in the MCA field trip program to Fosterville Gold Mine.
“Over 600 students from 27 schools have visited Victorian mine sites as part of this career awareness program which started in 2022. It is a unique industry led program that the mine workers really enjoy taking part in as we build the next generation of geo scientists and mine workers.
“Almost every school in Loddon has taken part in career field trips which says a lot for local schools supporting students in the region. It is really important that young people making decisions about training and high school subjects are aware of the jobs out there, especially in regional areas close to home and there is nothing like seeing a work place in real life.
“Students are always amazed at how a mine is like a mini city with so many different jobs from truck drivers to geologists and safety officers to engineers.
“Mining is a growing industry, we know we need a lot more minerals globally to build the EVs, renewables, smart phones and other high tech gadgets we use everyday. New mines are planned in Northern Victoria if government approvals and further exploration confirm gold and mineral sands deposits, so it is really important the young people know there are future jobs in mining nearby and around the world as we produce more minerals for our high tech lives.”
