Before being deployed to Darwin to join the ill-fated AIF 2/21 Battalion which was made up mainly of country soldiers from around Victoria, Richard married his sweet heart Hilda Barton on January 11, 1941. Richard never got to return to Victoria before being deployed to the Indonesian island of Ambon where he died in 1945, never getting to hold his daughter Margaret (Rawson).
