Housing shortage impacts families

A Letter to the Editor

Housing shortage impacts families - feature photo

Sir, Housing insecurity is not just a young person’s problem. As a father and grandfather, I have seen it affect both my daughter and myself.

She is a single mother of two, facing her fourth forced move in five years. I am living in a caravan because I cannot secure a rental. I have met other men my age in the same position.

Recently, while staying with my daughter to help, I had her crying on my shoulder from the stress of constant upheaval.

She has even had to cancel inspections because she cannot afford the fuel. Her children are terrified of losing their school and friends.

This is not about blaming investors—they have a right to a fair return. But families like ours are not their target market. That is why government owned housing is essential.

We need immediate action: purchase existing houses, expand stock with federal support, and require new estates to include public housing.

Families and older Australians alike deserve stability. Housing insecurity is tearing at the fabric of our community. It is time to restore dignity through secure homes.
